Two years after the release of Highway To Hassake (also on Sublime Frequencies), legendary Syrian singer Omar Souleyman delivers his frenetic Dabke 2020 to worldwide ears. Dabke is a party music popular in the Middle East, which Souleyman channels into an incredible techno-beat. Driven by synthetic percussive rhythms, the compressed, syncopated lines buzz through breakneck keyboard solos, singsong bouzouki, and the insistent melodies of Souleyman’s vocals. The frantic pace doesn’t let up until the meditative closing track Kaset Hanzal. This compilation is a collection of various recordings drawn from the hundreds of cassettes released by Souleyman between 1994 and 2006. Featuring the effervescent Lansob Sherek and La Sidounak Sayyada, this selection shoots for sonic exultation, a blazing set to coincide with his recent debut European tour.
